"Enhanced" Crash Course in Media Literacy

A four-hour gateway to the principles and concepts of media literacy education.

Learn how to ask important questions about what you watch, read and listen to in this acclaimed four-hour seminar taught regularly throughout the year by CML staff. The "Enhanced" Crash Course in Media Literacy is an excellent way to jumpstart your involvement in media literacy. Even those who have taken it in the past will find the "enhanced" crash course offers not only new insights into educational theory but more importantly, practical new implementation tools for classrooms from kindergarten to college.

The CML Crash Course is an interactive introduction to the principles and elements of media literacy education and CML's framework for teaching it – the CML MediaLit Kit™ During this four-hour workshop you will learn and experience the core concepts of media literacy through presentations, demonstrations and interactive hands-on activities that examine all elements of our mediated society from identity representations to your favorite programs on TV.

Whether you are a teacher, community organizer, youth leader, religious educator, parent or anyone who wants to know more about this exciting educational agenda, you will have the opportunity not only to examine your own relationship with media but also learn practical ways to introduce media literacy skills in your classroom, afterschool program or community group. Teams of two or more from the same organization or school are encouraged. We often have a waiting list so we urge you to register early. To hold a reservation, payment must be received.

Fees: $55 per person or $100 for a team of two. Additional team members are $45 each. The fee includes a valuable collection of handouts as well as light refreshments.

Location: The "Crash Course" is held at various locations in the Santa Monica, CA area. You'll be notified of the exact location when you register. Driving and free parking instructions will be included in your e-mail confirmation.

Certificate of Attendance: A Professional Development Certificate of Attendance for 4 contact hours can be made available upon request.

How to Register:

To attend a CML "Crash Course," select a date from the calendar above, print out the Registration Form and fax or mail it with your check or credit card. You may also call (310) 581-0260, ext 1# and register with a credit card. Payment must be received with the registration to hold your reservation. Confirmation of your registration will be sent promptly by email. If payment is not received, your participation is subject to cancellation and others on our waiting list will be notified.

Cancellation and Substitution Policy:
If you find you must cancel in case of emergency, please notify us within 48 hours of the seminar. You may reschedule for another session within the next 6 months or substitutions are permitted - you may invite a friend or colleague to attend in your place. Cancellations less than 48 hours are non-refundable. In case of seminars held on Saturday, any inquiry or notification must be made by 5 pm Friday.
